Hair Apparent
For Christmas, my sister Laura wanted me to design a business card for her hair styling business in Valencia, CA. Things were kinda busy so I bought her something instead. She requested the business card again when her birthday rolled around January 4th. Again, too busy, and I ended up buying her something. Well, just in time for my parent's anniversary this past Wednesday, I set aside some time last weekend and finished Laura's card.She wanted the card to be larger than a normal business card, hoping people would put it somewhere it would be seen, like on a refrigerator or desk, rather than getting lost in someone's wallet, so we decided on a 2.5" x 3.5" playing card size. I was totally down with that as the larger size and dimensions are a better showcase for the artwork. She also had a sense of which colors she liked and the style she wanted, which I appropriated from greeting cards, websites and different artists she had taken notice of. I was already interested in doing a take on this retro style that's kind of popular at the moment so this project interested me from the start.
I initially sketched the woman out in pencil, scanned it, "inked" and colored it in Illustrator, then took it into Photoshop to airbrush in the eye shadow. I have a Wacom tablet, but I mostly just kept to the mouse. I had the eyes originally colored black, then a deep blue, which was cute, but when I began playing with making them the color they are now, the character took on this weird, possessed look which I really liked and also contrasted well with the color of the eye shadow, so I kept it. The stars and lettering were all from a font package called House-A-Rama from House Industries. We haven't decided on a cardstock or printer yet as there's still some tweaking to do,
but it'll definitely be something glossy (and I normally don't like glossy, but it fits the style).I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out so far.

Pretty funky & spunky!! I think it's a definite eye catcher
deffinitely cute. If i lived in Cali, I'd probably look her up for a cut and style, just based on the cute card. I think her business will be remembered.
