Lisa Hayes (sans Minmei and Rick)

I went and saw a friend, Lisa Hayes, play Genghis Cohen in Hollywood Wednesday night (02/10/06). It had been a while since I'd seen her last - we used to work together at the office I'm still stuck at, but she left California to pursue her musical dreams in Austin, TX a couple years ago. She was back this week, however, visiting L.A. for a screening of the feature length documentary, Cowboy Del Amor, in which her song "Love" is featured.

The songs she played on Wednesday night were stripped down - just Lisa on guitar, her voice, and her friend, the amazing Michael Thompson on accordion filling the space - so it was much different than the the tracks on her CD, Sweet Forgiveness, which I'm used to listening to. I supposed it's due to all the touring and playing she's been doing in Texas, but her voice has even more depth and texture than it used to, and it sounded simply beautiful and aching in the small space at Genghis. "Like honey," is how my friend Rebekah put it. True dat.

Highlights of her set included "Are You Still Mine?" (love this song), "Where Angels Fear to Go" (really love this song) and some original "hillbilly music" she launched into for her final song, the name of which eludes me, but it was fast and fun, and something of hers that I'd never heard before and I can't wait for her to record it so I can have it on my iPod.

Get her CD at cdbaby.com.

wow very cool. Leaving LA to go to Texas to chase your dreams...it's usually the other way around. Good for her!
