Frustrated

Haven't been out on an audition in two weeks. Didn't rock that hard in class last night. Did go out with some actor friends from class though, which was cool. Mich (sounds like "Mitch" which is what we call her, but I think it's short for "Michelle" hence the spelling), Ayende, Charlie and John. We finally arrived at a bar across from Warner Bros. studios after driving to two other places, one of which required a $20 entrance fee (screw that!) and one of which was just closing. Was fun. Got to know everyone a bit better and left around 1:30am wondering why we'd never done that before.

I need to try and be more social. Vodka makes it easier.

Blah

Nothing to report. Had a great class Tuesday night. Videotaped scenes. Didn't think the scene went all that well until we watched all the taped scenes at the end of class. Then I was like, "Hm. Yeah, that scene was pretty good and I was good in it." Hate that I wasn't feeling that during the scene.

Right now I'm at work trying to finish a huge project before next Wednesday. No way I'm going to finish it unless I put tons of late-night hours and the weekend into it. A year ago I would've committed all the time needed, now I'm not so sure.

Falling asleep at work...

Last night I got the most sleep I've gotten in the past couple of weeks - was in bed by 1am - and I'm more tired than usual. Maybe the extra sleep tricked my body into thinking it was the weekend so wants to sleep more. Gotta get a project done here at work and I have no motivation and I'm tired and I'd rather be on a set.

Energy Shmenergy

Thought I'd at least get a callback for that Mazda audition on Monday, but so far, no word. Sucks.

Acting class was good last night. My scene went pretty well. Dee gave me a couple of tweaks to think about as we're going to be taping the scenes next week. Although I was kind of over-the-top, weird and spastic (the scene consists of a crazy musician who finds out his girlfriend is pregnant) and Dee said my characterization was fine since I had committed to it, I'm wondering if I'm too over-the-top. Probably going to take it down some come next week. Or maybe it's fine. I hate it when I second-guess myself. The class said the scene was funny and my friend John said I was good, but... hm

Audition 3 - Mazda

So I had an audition for a Japanese Mazda commercial this morning at 10:55am. Went very well. I was a bit tired when I got up 'cuz my friend got in around 1am from a commercial he shot in Arizona, and came over to watch "the Sopranos" which I had TiVO'd, but got my energy up real high and did about as well on the audition as I could have, methinks.

I'm now at work and will have to stay late tonight to make up the time I missed. Arrived around 12:30pm this afternoon and am starting to crash. Need some Mtn. Dew or something.

Hope I get a callback for this commercial. If there's anything to be said for getting your energy up, I'll get a callback, 'cuz my energy was REALLY high. I pretty much spent the whole time driving from Sherman Oaks to Hollywood getting myself all psyched up and energized. By the time I got there, I was overflowing with energy but had it under complete control. Dee's big on the whole energy thing and I really took what I've been learning in her class and applied it here. Hope that came through on camera.

I think working up all that energy has left me depleted 'cuz I feel really spent and it's hard for me to concentrate here at work.

The waiting room was filled with models. I'm SO not a model but I'm thinking that might work in my favor as (at least with the group I was with) my acting skills were able to shine a bit more brightly.

We'll see what happens.

the love continues...

Just got a call from Madonna telling me I have an audition for a Japanese Mazda commercial. Cool. I did a Japanese commercial about 10 years ago for something in Japan called "Big Steps Jazz Festival" or something like it. In it, I had longish hair, wearing a three piece suit, a headband, holding a bugle... while riding an ostrich. I sh*t you not. I don't have tape of this one and my best friend at the time was supposed to be taking pictures and "accidentally" (I say this 'cuz I'm not altogether sure) exposed the film. One not very revealing picture came out, but other than that, I have no record of being an "Ostrich Jockey" (as it says on my resume). If any readers know how I can get a tape of this, I'd GREATLY (and I don't use all caps and bold together, lightly) appreciate it.

Still have big love for my Stage 9 managers, Blossom and Carol. Although I have only been on two auditions since joining them, it doesn't appear to be their fault as Madonna (their assistant) called me yesterday saying they've submitted me for so many projects that they need new 8x10s ASAP. I should be able to drop off about 40 this weekend. They went through about 35-40 headshots in 2-3 weeks. My former agent had about 30 headshots and never once asked me to replenish them. Grrrr... Granted, he had me change my headshots 3 times, but he had about 4-6 months with each new quantity of headshots.

Now I have to figure out why I'm not getting the auditions since they're submitting me. Do I need new headshots? Hmmm...

It's been a while since I've last posted; nothing really to report, unfortunately. Didn't get called back for Avril (pretty much figured) or Jeep (was very hopeful), which sucks. Sent a smiley, more commercial photo to Blossom for her to post on LACasting.com. She thinks I'll land more auditions with a happier photo, and I believe her. I'm not completely happy with the photo, however. I did a lot of retouching on it, but I just don't think it was that good to begin with. Hopefully I'll come into some money soon and be able to get new, professional, bomb-ass headshots.

My friend Michael just booked two jobs : One for Capital One where they're flying him out to Arizona for a few days and one for a Spike TV promo. Both shoot this week. So cool. That's what I need to be doing to be a full-time actor; booking jobs and bringing in the money so I can quit my 9-5 job. But first, I need more auditions.

Diet Pepsi spot

One of my best friends, Ryan Bollman, shot a commercial like, last week, and it aired last night on the Oscars. Pretty cool. Jason Biggs takes the last Diet Pepsi from Ryan after eating a buffalo wing that seems to be way too spicy. Ryan was also the guy in the notorious "horse-farting" ad for Bud Light during the Super Bowl, which was yanked after only that one airing.

First Two Auditions

So the auditions went pretty well. Not great, but just okay.

AUDITION #1: The Avril Lavigne audition was for something (probably a video) called "The Calling." I had to dress kinda "punk." Punk in the way of Blink 182, so that kinda new-punk. Mohawk not necessary. However, on advice from my sister, I did an off-center faux-hawk that actually looked pretty cool. Was thinking about doing my hair like that all the time, but it took a while to make look cool, so probably not. I also wore a nose ring and dressed all skater-like. The audition consisted of me going in with four other (mostly white) guys. The casting director told us to "juice it up" as the previous groups had not been very lively. We were like "okay" but were wondering what she wanted us to do and asked as much. She said, "Don't worry, I'll let you know." So then she had us slate our names and give profiles, and then she asks "Who here is from L.A.?" So I'm like, "I am" and raise my hand. Then she asks where we're going to go after L.A. and some other questions and then says, "That's it." We're all kind of left bewildered as we file out as I don't think any of us thought that was the audition. I'm sure she told the next group to "juice it up" as we weren't very juicy. During the audition I thought she was just kind of warming us up to a point where she would then start the audition. Nope.

LESSON : Always be "on" at auditions because you only have a certain amount of time to stand out which doesn't leave any time to be less than "11."

AUDITION #2. This one was for a Jeep/Cherokee commercial featuring friends going on a camping trip and toilet paper, and went much better than the Avril spot. The guy running the audition, Boise Thomas, is a cool guy who has booked tons of commercials himself and runs a commerical auditioning workshop every so often, one which I'll probably take within the next month or so. Whenever I have the money and time to do it. Anyway, I think I got to shine a bit in this one and although I'm probably a little too young-looking and boyish for this spot, I'd love to get a callback. If only to show my new managers that I can get callbacks.
